Dr. Lloyd Michener

Dr. Michener graduated from Oberlin College in 1974, and from Harvard
Medical School in 1978. He was a resident in family medicine at Duke
from 1978 1981, receiving the national Mead Johnson Award in Family
Medicine his senior year.
He was a Kellogg Fellow in Family Medicine from 1981 1982, after which
he joined the Duke faculty. He has served in almost every role in the
Department, including Medical Student Director, Residency Director,
Fellowship Director, Clinic Chief, Chief of Community Medicine, and
Chief of Family Practice. In 1994, he was named Clinical Professor and
Chairman of the Department.
He has a long standing interest in prevention, community health, and
training of faculty. At Duke, he founded student training programs in
nutrition and prevention and has a leadership role in training the Duke
faculty, including directing the Masters Program in Clinical Leadership.
Nationally Dr. Michener is a member of the Board of the Association
of Departments of Family Medicine, the Association of Teachers of Preventive
Medicine, the Council of Academic Societies, and the Executive Council
of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Internationally, Dr.
Michener and the Department faculty have an increasing role in advising
other countries in strengthening the focus of their health care systems
on prevention and primary care.
