William J. Ledger, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from Princeton
University in 1954, with his major in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public
and International Affairs. He received his MD degree from the University
of Pennsylvania in 1958. After a rotating internship for one year in
Erie, Pennsylvania, he practiced Obstetrics-Gynecology as a General
Duty Medical Officer in the Air Force. He completed his residency training
in Obstetrics-Gynecology at Temple University in 1964 and received a
Masters Degree in Obstetrics-Gynecology. He was a member of the full
time academic facutly at the University of Michigan from 1964-1972,
and the University of Southern California from 1972-1979.
He was named the Given Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cornell
in 1979 when he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology.
His research interests have focused upon infection. He was the first
Obstetrician-Gynecologist to be elected to the Infectious Disease Society
of America; He was a founder and first president of the Infectious Disease
Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology in America and currently is the
president of the International Disease Society of Obstetrics-Gynecology.
He is the author of over one hundred fifty scientific articles, many
textbook chapters, and the sole author of two editions of over one hundred
fifty scientific articles, many textbook chapters, and the sole author
of two editions of Infections in the Female.
