Born in Vienna, degree as M.A. at the Economic University of Vienna.
Started working in 1964 in the Vienna Chamber of Labour, an organisation
closely affiliated to the Trade Unions, since 1973 as Head of the Department
of Economic Research.
Since November 1978 Head of the Department for Financial Planning of
the holding company for the Austrian state-owned industries - OIAG.
Since April 1980 Head of the Cabinet of Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky,
since November 1982 Secretary of State in the Federal Chancellery, responsible
for economic policy coordination and de-velopment cooperation.
Since 1984 Federal Minister for Transport and Public Economy in the
Government of Fred Sinowatz, from June 1986 until April 1995 Federal
Minister of Finance in governments headed by Franz Vranitzky.
Since May 1995 consultant of Montana AG, Vienna.
Since April 1996 Chairman of the Managing Board GiroCredit AG. Since
October 1996 consultant of Erste Bank AG. Since May 2001 consultant
of Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG.
