20 Years of Music for Medicine with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

By Andreas Grossbauer

Entry in the “Philharmonic Diary” of the Program for the Sixth Subscription Concert March 18, 2017 and March 19, 2017 and the Soiree Subscription Series, March 21, 2107

The “American Austrian Foundation“(AAF) was initiated by the former Austrian President Rudolf Kirchschläger in 1984. The foundation’s primary mission was to promote understanding between the peoples of the United States and Austria by engaging in a diverse set of programs in the fields of Medicine, Fine Arts, Diplomacy, Media and Music.

Since 1997, and this is the reason for this entry in the Philharmonic Diary,  the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has contributed to the American Austrian Foundation’s Open Medical Institute’s program by sending a chamber formation to New York to play a benefit concert. This year marked the 20th anniversary of this unique partnership. The Nicolai Quintet performed and 800 people attended the concert at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. More than 300 people attended the dinner following the concert, which raised an impressive $630,000.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to have helped the AAF achieve a new fundraising “high” during its 20 years of support. Read more in our E-Paper
