Humes Visiting Professorship
The Humes Visiting Professorships are a bequest by Dr. Jean Humes' estate in memory of her husband, John P. Humes, former U.S. Ambassador to Austria and the first president of the American Austrian Foundation.
The AAF annually awards joint professorships to leading physicians in the United States and Austria who have directed or co-directed at least one of the Open Medical Institute's Salzburg Medical Seminars.
Since the program began in 1990, 35 Humes Visiting Professorships have been awarded in the areas of orthopedics, anesthesiology, urology, molecular biology, surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, radiology, oncology, gynecology and family medicine.
The Humes Visiting Professorships led to the establishment of the Andlinger Residency Exchange Program in 2001. This program supports the exchange of medical expertise and fosters relationships between medical establishments in the United States and Austria. These professorships result in joint research and educational programs (Andlinger Fellowship).
- The award is a bilateral exchange and must be completed within five years of being accepted.
- Humes Professors visit each other's institutions and give (as a minimum) two lectures on cutting edge developments in their field, grand rounds with residents and attending physicians and a session with case presentations.
- Humes Professors schedule the visit themselves and submit the schedule to the AAF for documentation purposes.
- Within the five year period, residents and attending physicians from the award recipients' institutions should also visit each other through the Andlinger program (at least three participants from each institution).
