Hugh Hemmings Jr., M.D. Ph.D. is Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology
and Vice Chair of Research in Anesthesiology at New York Presbyterian
Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. An internationally
known neuropharmacologist, he is an expert in the synaptic effects of
general anesthestics and mechanisms of neuronal signal transduction.
His research in these areas is supported by several grants from the
National Institutes of Health. He is active in several national and
international societies for anesthesiology and neuroscience, including
the scientific advisory board of the Association of University Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Hemmings earned a BS in Biochemistry from Yale College, a Ph.D.
in pharmacology from Yale University, and an M.D. from Yale Medical
School. His Ph.D. work in the laboratory of Paul Greenyard, Ph.D. was
cited in his 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He was an
intern in medicine at the Hospital of St.Raphae,l he completed his residency
in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and did fellowship
training in cardiac anesthesia at New York-Cornell Medical Center, where
he has been a faculty member for 12 years.
Dr. Hemmings has authored more than 100 articles in anesthesiology
and neuroscience, and has edited two books, including “Foundations
of Anesthesia”, a basic science compendium for anesthesiology,
published in 2000.
