12.09.2010 | OMI FELLOW REPORT
IN EVERY ISSUE ONE OF OUR FELLOWS SHARES HIS OR HER EXPERIENCES OF AAF/OMI. THIS ISSUE WE HEAR FROM DR. MIHAELA JULIANA MUNTEAN FROM TIMISOARA, ROMANIA
Recently, I have been extremely fortunate to participate in the AAF-OMI medical observership program. Prof. Dr. Gerald Maurer kindly offered me the opportunity to attend an observership in the Cardiology department of the Vienna General Hospital and meet his excellent medical team, who helped me get an insight into several modern investigations and treatments routinely performed here, but still not in current use in Romanian hospitals. It has been an informative and demanding time for me. For several weeks my scientific curiosity and my attention have been entirely captured by echocardiography in an outstanding, modern echo-lab.
The afternoon activities organized by the AAF are especially worth mentioning: The interesting seminars on the Austrian Medical Healthcare or Clinical Research, as well as the visits to the Society of Physicians, also known as the “Billroth House” and to the Museum of Medical History – “the Josephinum”. These last two events gave us a deeper understanding of Billroth’s well-known assertion "Only the man who is familiar with the art and science of the past is competent to aid in its progress in the future."
To conclude, the OMI Medical observership is a link between past and future in medical science, a bridge between different medical systems and gives us hope for the improvement of the medical care throughout the world by means of joint scientific research and better medical teaching.
