About Us
Background
The American Austrian Foundation, Inc. (AAF) was founded in 1984 by a group of Americans and Austrians with a keen interest in promoting a positive relationship between the two countries. They included former Austrian President Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger, the late Honorable Cyrus R. Vance, George Ball and John E. Leslie, as well as the Honorable Milton A. Wolf, Ph.D., the late Billy Wilder, David Rockefeller, the Honorable Felix Rohatyn and the Honorable Henry A. Grunwald.
Through exchanges in medicine, communications and arts, The American Austrian Foundation endeavors to use Austria's central location and infrastructure bringing East and West together in the interests of peace and prosperity.
Mission
The American Austrian Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental
organization that seeks to enhance the relationship between the United
States and Austria through exchanges in medicine, communications, science
and the arts.
As a result of the dramatic political and economic changes in the last
decade, Austria has regained its historical position as a meeting place,
perfectly situated in the heart of Europe. This central location and
highly developed infrastructure serves as a platform for conducting
programs which serve as an artery for exchange between East and West
which bring Americans, Austrians and Eastern Europeans together, offering
them the opportunity to share ideas, establish contacts and build lasting
personal relationships. The AAF conducts its own programs and oversees
joint programs with American, Austrian and international organizations.
To facilitate the operation of programs in Austria, the Friends of the American Austrian Foundation founded The Salzburg Stiftung of the AAF in 1995 and the Vienna Chapter of the AAF in 2002.
